The Irvine-specific obstacle

Orange County is roughly 82 percent HOA-governed, with around 5,000 associations, and Irvine is at the dense end of that. Most of the city is covered by a community association, and many properties sit under both a sub-association and a master association — which can mean two approvals.

Add the Irvine Company, which owns a very large share of the city's apartment stock and applies consistent policies across it. That cuts both ways: a single "no" affects thousands of units, and a single "yes" does too.

What we'd do here: ask early, in writing, and offer to help draft a policy rather than requesting an exception. Local conditions worth knowing

The sun is good and the weather is boring, which is what you want. Irvine is far enough inland to escape the worst of the marine layer but close enough to the coast that panels run cool, which slightly improves efficiency.

Santa Ana winds. Irvine gets them, mostly in autumn. This is the real argument for over-specifying mounting hardware rather than economising on it, and for checking the clamps after any wind event.

Balcony sizes in a lot of Irvine's newer apartment stock are modest, and the railing is often glass. Glass balustrades need specific clamps and some associations won't allow anything mounted to them at all. Measure and check before ordering.
