What we collect
If you subscribe: your email address, and which page you subscribed from. We use it to send the newsletter. That's all.
If you use the calculator: your answers, stored without your name or email unless you ask us to send you the result. We look at them in aggregate to see which questions confuse people.
Everyone: we use Google Analytics. It sets a cookie so it can tell a returning visit from a new one, and records which pages you looked at, roughly where in the world you are, and which site you came from. Your IP address is truncated before it's stored.
We've turned off the advertising side of it: no ad personalisation, no sharing your data with Google's advertising products, no advertising cookies. So it isn't following you around other websites — but it is counting you here, and it's Google's software, not a privacy-first alternative.
We also use PostHog, which tells us which pages people actually use and where they give up — the calculator especially. It sets its own cookie. Three things we've deliberately switched off:
- No session recording. We can't watch a replay of your visit.
- No form or input tracking. It records clicks on links and buttons and nothing else. Whatever you type into the calculator, the outlet check, or the landlord letter is never sent to it.
- No profile of you unless you've given us your email. Anonymous readers are counted, not identified.
If any of this matters to you, a tracker blocker will stop both of them and nothing on this site will break.
What we don't do
- Sell or rent our email list.
- Pass your details to solar installers or lead buyers.
- Run behavioural advertising.
- Track you across other websites.
Affiliate links
When you click a link to a seller, that seller may set a cookie so they know the visit came from us. That's how they know to pay us a commission. We don't see who you are, only that a sale happened.
Getting rid of your data
Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link, which removes you immediately. To have anything else deleted, email hello@smallsolarco.com and we'll do it.
California privacy rights
California residents have rights under the CCPA to know what personal information is collected, to have it deleted, and not to be discriminated against for asking. Email us and we'll comply. We don't sell personal information as the CCPA defines it.
Changes
If this policy changes we'll date the change at the top.
