Getting started

What is plug-in solar? A solar panel small enough to hang on a balcony or stand on a patio, with a converter box that lets it plug into an ordinary wall outlet. It feeds power into your home's wiring, reducing what you buy from the utility. Also called balcony solar, plug-and-play solar, or in Germany, where it's normal, a Balkonkraftwerk.

How is it different from rooftop solar? Size and permanence. A rooftop system is 6,000 to 10,000 watts, bolted to a structure you own, installed under permit by a contractor, and costs tens of thousands. A plug-in system is 180 to 1,200 watts, clamped on, installed by you in an afternoon, and costs hundreds.

Do I need to own my home? No. That's the point. You need somewhere sunny to put it and permission from whoever controls that space.

Do I need an electrician? Not for a normal installation into an existing outdoor outlet. If there's no outlet where you need one, or you're thinking about running a cord through a wall, that's an electrician's job. Two-minute check.

How long does it take to set up? An afternoon. Most of it is fiddling with railing clamps.

How heavy is it? A 400-watt panel is roughly 40 to 50 pounds and about the size of a door. Two people make it easy. One person can manage it.

Can I take it with me when I move? Yes, in a few minutes. It's a possession, not an improvement to the building.

Money

How much does a kit cost? $285 for the cheapest sensible starting point. $700 to $1,000 for a proper two-panel setup. $1,400 to $2,400 with a battery. Budget another $100 for mounting hardware and a cord.

How much will it save me? In Orange County, on Southern California Edison, roughly $120 to $160 a year for one panel on a west-facing railing; around $380 for a well-oriented 1,200-watt setup where someone's home during the day; around $560 with a battery. Work out yours.

How long until it pays for itself? Two to four years without a battery, four to six with one, assuming a decent aspect. A north-facing balcony can push it past eight years, which is our usual reason for saying don't.

Is there a tax credit? No. The federal 30 percent Residential Clean Energy Credit ended for anything bought after 31 December 2025. There's no California statewide credit for this. If a price you're quoted subtracts 30 percent, it's out of date.

Do I get paid for extra power? No. SB 868 says nothing about export compensation, so anything you produce and don't use is worth zero. This is why the systems are small and why daytime use matters so much.

Will it lower my fixed monthly charge? No. SCE's Base Services Charge — around $24.15 a month for non-CARE customers — is charged regardless of how much electricity you buy. Solar reduces the usage part of your bill, not the fixed part.

Is it cheaper than switching rate plans? Sometimes, and you should check. Moving to a rate plan that matches your habits is free and can be worth more than a small panel. Do that first, then buy the panel.

Can my landlord say no? Yes. SB 868 binds utilities, not landlords. Your lease still applies. How to ask.

Can my HOA say no? Possibly. California's Solar Rights Act protects rooftop solar from association rules, but whether it covers a panel on a balcony railing is untested. The longer answer.

Do I need a permit from my city? Generally no, because you're not altering the building. But SB 868 binds utilities, not building departments, and balcony obstruction and egress rules still apply.

Do I have to tell my utility? Under SB 868 a utility may require a simple online registration — address, make, model, size. That's a notification, not an approval. You don't wait for a reply.

Can my utility charge me a fee? No, once the law is in force. The bill specifically bars fees on the device or on the electricity it produces.

What happens in 2030? The interconnection exemption expires on 1 January 2030 unless the Legislature extends it. Separately, from that date it becomes illegal to sell non-compliant devices in California.

Safety

Is it safe? Certified equipment installed sensibly, yes. Germany has over a million of these with no pattern of device-attributable fires. The genuine engineering concerns raised by electrical workers and fire officials — mainly about overloading a branch circuit — are what the 1,200-watt cap and the UL 3700 standard exist to address. What is UL 3700? The safety standard written specifically for plug-in photovoltaic equipment. UL Solutions launched it in January 2026. SB 868 requires certification as plug-in PV by UL or an equivalent lab, which in practice means this.

Will it trip my GFCI outlet? It shouldn't. Compatibility with residual-current protection is one of the things UL 3700 tests. If your GFCI trips repeatedly when the panel is connected, unplug it and ask an electrician — that's a real signal, not a nuisance.

Can I plug it into a power strip or extension lead? Into an outdoor-rated extension cord of adequate gauge, yes, though a direct outlet is better. Never a lightweight indoor cord, never a daisy-chain of strips, and never under a rug or through a doorway that closes on it.

What happens in a blackout? It shuts off within a fraction of a second. This is required and deliberate, so that line workers repairing the grid aren't dealing with power arriving from your balcony. It means no backup power at all.

What about wind? The real risk with balcony solar isn't electrical, it's a large flat object coming loose several floors up. Use mounting hardware rated for your railing, check it after storms, and don't improvise with zip ties.

Buying

Which kit should I buy? Depends on your aspect and budget. Comparison table, or the wizard if you'd rather answer questions than read one.

Should I wait for more certified products? If you want choice, yes — the catalogue should fill out through 2027. If your balcony faces south or west, buying certified components now is reasonable, and the equipment isn't going to get dramatically cheaper.

Do I need a battery? Only if you're out during the day or you're on a time-of-use plan with an expensive evening peak. A battery raises what you save by roughly 50 percent and roughly doubles the payback period.

How many panels can I have? Up to 1,200 watts of AC output in total, per dwelling unit, under SB 868. That's typically two to three panels.

Living with it

How do I know it's working? Some kits have an app. Others don't, in which case a $25 plug-in energy meter between the inverter and the outlet will tell you. We'd get one either way — the data is the interesting part.

Does it need cleaning? Occasionally. Dust costs a few percent of output. A rinse with a hose two or three times a year is plenty. Don't climb anything to do it.

How long does it last? Panels typically carry 25-year warranties and lose about half a percent of output a year. Microinverters are usually warranted 10 to 12 years and are the part most likely to need replacing.

What if I move house? Take it. Unclip, unplug, box it, and re-hang it at the next place. Check the new place's orientation first — a kit that made $300 a year facing west can make $100 facing north.
